Our horse riding safaris offer a perfect blend of adventure and tranquillity, allowing you to connect with nature, observe wildlife from a unique perspective, and create unforgettable memories.
When the Dyer family first came to Borana Conservancy, horses were the only means of transport. The family’s love of horses remains strong and horse riding continues to be one of the best ways of seeing wildlife. We thoroughly recommend it to all our guests and can cater to all riding abilities.
At the Borana Conservancy Head Quarters, we keep a stable of over thirty horses suitable for all riders. We have patient, easy horses, who have been trained to be careful with children and novice riders. From our stables, guests can ride through the plains among giraffe, zebra, eland and impala and experience wildlife at close quarters.
For the more experienced rider, we have thoroughbred horses and thoroughbred-crosses standing between 14.2hh and 16.3hh. All the horses are well-schooled and ridden in snaffle bridles. Guests can explore Borana and beyond, meandering across this beautiful landscape and riding among a variety of wildlife species which populate the conservancy.
We use English-style Wintec saddles and have a few Australian stock saddles. These are chosen specifically to ensure the comfort of both the horse and rider.
All advanced riders must be comfortable at a walk, trot and canter in an English saddle.
Non-riders and beginners are welcome at any level.
There is a strict weight limit of 15 stone/210 lbs/95 kg.

This is an indigenous forest to the south of Borana Conservancy which gives guests the opportunity to explore a completely different ecosystem. This ancient indigenous forest acts as a wildlife corridor and elephant migratory route to Mt Kenya. It is also home to the mesmerising Blue Pools, a secluded swimming spot with turquoise water fed by glacial meltwater from the mountain.
In the forest, you will be met by your Borana Lodge guide and enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch you can explore the canopy walk, a walkway suspended 40ft above the ground, meandering through the treetops of the Forest where your guide will give you information on the trees, monkeys and butterflies.
For guests staying three or more nights, riding Wild Borana offers overnight horse rides and fly camp adventures on Borana Conservancy. The fly camp is extremely comfortable with full linens, pillows, duvets, bed frames and a mess tent including a fully stocked bar and sitting room.
