This Maasai ceremony is performed by members of the age set, ten years after warriorhood – this after the Maasai boys become men so around 15 years of age. It marks the status of a warrior transitioning to a senior warrior. This initiation also permits senior warriors to marry, which in turn prepares them to become future fathers. The ceremony takes place in the manyatta of the leader of that particular age group – he is chosen by his peers. During the four day festival, warriors are prohibited to carry weapons such as sticks, spears, knifes, etc.
The age group has to dance well past the point of exhaustion.
A Maasai elder, who also happens to be head of security on Borana Conservancy is invited to the ceremony.
